Woman's anger after purse stolen in shop

A woman has described the thief who stole her purse while she was in a Paignton charity shop as 'scum'.

And Rita Rowe was not the only victim as on the same day another woman was targeted at a second charity shop in Torbay Road.

Both thefts have prompted police to urge women to take care of Brochures Printing their bags and make sure they are secure.

Rita, who is in her 60s and from Paignton, was out shopping with her husband Alan when her purse, containing pounds70 in cash, was taken.

While Alan had gone back to their car, Rita went into the Age Concern shop in Hyde Road.

It was only when she realised her handbag felt lighter that she checked inside and noticed her purse, which had also contained several items of sentimental value, was missing.

She said: "The person who violated me should be locked up.

"I suspect they have stolen my purse to take my pounds70 to buy drugs and then throw my belongings in the hedge.

"They are of sentimental value and I am so hurt this has happened.

"In my purse was my driving license, photographs of my grandchildren, things which belonged to my mother and very special words in the form of a poem about my late father.

"People never think about what's in their purse. I didn't until it had gone.

"I am appealing for anyone who finds my purse to please hand it in.

"I am urging other women to make sure they are conscious of their handbags at all times.

"The amount of times I see women walking around with their bags open. Mine was zipped closed and this still happened. I always thought 'it'll not happen to me' but it did and I am angry.

"The police have been very helpful and very considerate to me. I hope their investigation is successful and these people are caught."

Sue Swain, assistant manager of the Age Concern shop, said: "We are so annoyed this happened to someone in our shop. It's a horrible thing to have happened."

PC Chris Tapley, who is investigating the theft, said: "PCSOs will have a high visibility presence in Paignton and will be visiting charity shops in the area.

"We are urging all women to make sure their bag and its contents are secure.

"There are a couple of other reports of purses being taken but we can't confirm if they were stolen or lost. We are also urging people not to carry large sums of money with them."
