Dawn shoedown as fashionistas

A CUT-PRICE range of Jimmy Choo shoes - beloved of Sex And The City heroine Carrie Bradshaw - and accessories sparked a fashion frenzy in Scotland's shopping capital, Glasgow, yesterday.

Brass Bangle

Hundreds of giddy women, and some very devoted if bored boyfriends, queued outside H&M in Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries to snap up heels, handbags and accessories created by Jimmy Choo, the shoe brand of the stars.

The Buchanan Street store is the only shop in Scotland to stock the Ultimate Partywear range. Shelves were picked clean of the line in just hours during yesterday's nationwide launch.

Some customers camped outside the store from 5pm the previous evening and others had travelled from as far as Oban.

The first 160 customers were given bracelets assigning a specific shopping time, and then allowed into the store six at a time. With only 300 JimmyChoo items on sale, shoppers were restricted in the number of items they could buy.

H&M customers can expect to pay frombetween L49.99 for a pair of zebraprint ballet pumps to around L180 for a pair of over-the-knee boots.

This is considerably cheaper than the designer's main range, with average JimmyChoo shoes costing between L450andL495,andupto L2000 for boots in an exotic skin, such as crocodile.

Chanel Charm Necklace

For those on an even tighter budget, a bracelet studded with Swarovski crystals was available for L14.99.

First in line was Carol McLaughlin, 23, from Glasgow, who had queued overnight with a couple of friends and who claimed she had barely noticed the previous night's wind and rain.

She said: "I'm here for the heels and handbags. I've got my eye on a pair of grey shoe boots. I could get four or five items here for the price of one in Fraser's."

Jim Scott, 48, had travelled from Edinburgh on the first train to surprise his wife with a wedding anniversary gift, the desired blue spike heels pictured on his mobile phone.

He said: "My wife doesn't know I'm here. I don't fancy my chances of getting in though."

CalumNicol, 20, travelled from Oban in the hope of giving his girlfriend a Christmas gift of a pair of zebra print heels retailing at L79.99.

This multi-faceted collection - masterminded by Tamara Mellon - marks Jimmy Choo's first foray into the high street.

Choo is H&M's seventh big-name designer range, since Karl Lagerfeld's collection launched in 2004.

Following this summer's hit collection by Matthew Williamson, it is the first H&M designer range to revolve around accessories, with a focus on footwear and bags.

A spokeswoman for H&M said: "This is the first time we have staged a designer launch on a Saturday, which is peak trading for us.

"We would expect the collection to sell out in a day, particularly since the Buchanan Street store is the only one in Scotland stocking the range."

A former accessories editor at British Vogue, Jimmy Choo president Tamara Mellon described the highstreet designs as "the perfect party pieces to buy now and then wear out that night".

Designer Stella McCartney, whose 2005 collection for H&M saw a particularly frenzied launch, showcased a one-off children's range for Gap earlier
